Daily Shit

Alena Skateboards is one of our favorite Canadian board companies. Gotta love the focus they have on the creative and fun side of skateboarding. We're backing these guys, you should too. Take a look at their site and philosophy, and tell us you're not down.

Anyhow, our good pal Jeremy over at Alena in Montreal was kind enough to send a 3 pack of their latest boards and we're giving them away to the first 3 readers who can name 3 of their pushers. Hit us up with your answers here.

Oh, and don't forget about the Shoot to Thrill premiere at the Bloor Cinema tonight and the closing party for A City Renewal Project at 39 Lisgar St. tomorrow if you're in Toronto.

Daily Shit

Red Bull has kind of been dominating the site the last couple of days (by coincidence, I swear). First A City Renewal, then Scott Serfas' show, and now comes the news that Shoot to Thrill, Red Bull and Color Magazine's 72 hour film contest, is having it's Toronto premiere tomorrow night at the Bloor Cinema at 9pm.

Shoot to Thrill is the best thing to happen to Canadian skateboarding in a while. Make sure you go out to the premiere and support it.

Check out the trailer here to get hyped. Check here for the listings for the rest of the dates.

Daily Shit

The lovely and talented Miss Julia Deakin (featured on the site way back when) will be having an exhibition called Ex Oh opening at the Emporium Gallery in Montreal tomorrow.

If you've in Montreal and can make it out to #74, 3035 St. Antoine Ouest, you can meet Julia and check out her latest work from 7pm to 11pm. The exhibition will also be open Friday to Sunday, from 12pm to 6pm. Private viewings will be available by appointment thereafter from November 24th to 26th.

This is the last exhibition of the year at Emporium, so get off your duff and support them.

Daily Shit

It's a Movember to remember, that's for sure. DC is going all out with it's moustache- ridden campaign to change the way men think about, discuss and treat their own health issues.

How? By generating awareness and raising money for men's health - through the growing of moustaches.

So far, it looks like every guy over at DC has a push broom on his face, they've released a limited edition sandal, and now, an online auction full of goodies.

Running until November 22, every penny of the proceeds of the auction will be going to prostate cancer research. It all ends on November 22nd at 5pm, so get your bidding hat on and get to it.

Daily Shit

There's a great bunch of artists (including Bob K, Ben Tour, Craig Engman and King Shit's own girl on the west coast Meghan Paterson) participating in a fundraising drive for the literacy outreach group People of Many. POM goes into communities battling poverty and provides literacy resources to children.

This year's fundraising initiative is called Hand to Hand. 28 artists from around the world donated the use of their work to make limited edition postcards. Only 10 copies of each image are printed, and are being distributed through 10 retail locations in Vancouver and Toronto.

The cards are sold by donation, so make your way to one of these Vancouver locations (Fine Finds, Livestock, Illustrated Example, One of a Few, Rain Boutique & Salon) and these Toronto locations (Livestock, Nomad and Type Books) to support a great cause.

Daily Shit

Krooked Skateboards and Mark Gonzales recently collaborated with the Clayton Brothers to produce a limited edition Guest Artist Series skateboard set, titled "Any Given Night".

Krooked put out a limited edition of 300 sets, while Rob and Christian Clayton reserved 25 pairs to customize as unique pieces unto themselves. Each is individually signed and hand stenciled, and sold by the Clayton Brothers as "Special Limited Edition" sets on their website.

That's all for today. Enjoy the weekend kiddies.

Transworld Snowboarding's Scott Serfas is having his first ever photo exhibition at the Red Bull Lounge in Vancouver later this month, called "1000 @ f5.6"

Daily Shit

Sure, it's kind of a catalog, but I'm backing the idea of skate companies doing online 'zines. Fourstar just released one. Plan B put one out about a week back. Wave of the future, kids. Soon paper will only be used to wipe with.

Converse Skateboarding? Where the hell did that come from? My finger is officially no longer on the pulse of anything...

Daily Shit

For any aspiring photographers, you've got til Friday to submit your photos for next week's SpyCam. There's a few spots left for photos, and what has been sent in is pretty sweet so far, so keep'em coming.

Speaking of photography, the good people over at Hamburger Eyes have a new exhibition up at the Photo Epicenter, called As Above, So Below, opening Friday in San Francisco.

It's described as such: "It will feature work by local and international artists in photography, installation, sound, painting, video, the gallery's answering machine (415-550-0701), and a green screen sculpture for psychic activation. A large selection of scripts, stories, visual publications and other texts commissioned from writers will also be on display."

Sounds mental. If you're around, bring your Uri Gellar spoon with you.

Daily Shit

You like poetry? Me neither. However, for those who do, Scott Bourne (in conjunction with Europe's Carhartt Streetwear) just released a book of poetry that looks pretty cool. You know, for poetry.

Skate Daily just released their first artist collaboration Tee with the Girl Art Dump's Andy Jenkins. Check it out.

Oh, and Stereo skateboards just announced they're re-releasing A Visual Sound and Tincan Folklore on DVD on Nov. 16th. Go get'em while you can, they're only printing a limited run.

If you've never heard of NYC photographer Boogie, drop whatever it is you're doing and pay attention.

Boogie's new book, Istanbul, is the second in a series of city themed titles (the first one being San Paulo). This time around, he stayed in the city for a week, shooting photos for 15 hours a day to try and put his first impressions of the city on film. The result is 96 pages of incredible images.

As with all of Boogie's work, shit is raw and unfiltered, at a lot of times it's unsettling as all hell. Definitely don't miss this one, kids.

Daily Shit

There's a couple great shows opening up across Canada this Thursday, so mark your calendars.

First, Toronto's Andrew WIlson has a show at Magic Pony entitled A World's History. Andrew's stuff is a trip, you should make the effort to check it out. It runs from November 6th to the 30th.

Daily Shit

Happy Halloween everybody. There will be no news today. We urge you, if you're feeling the need for some arty stuff, to either concentrate on making a banging costume for tonight, or go check out this list of the Top 100 Horror movie posters of all time.

Part 1 Part 2

It'll bring back some fond (or not so fond) childhood memories, when horror movies didn't totally suck and the posters were actually pieces of art.

Daily Shit

News will be brief today. A deadly plague called influenza is sweeping across the King Shit office, picking us off one by one. Fitting considering Halloween is coming.

Legendary skateboarder Steve Caballero will be exhibiting his photography and artwork at the Black and Brown Boutique (1225 West San Carlos) in San Jose, California this Saturday November 1st. If you're in that neck of the woods, the show runs til Dec. 15th.

Daily Shit

To everyone who's e-mailed in asking where Nieratko's doodles were this week, relax. He was jetsetting about the country, Dumb Dumb Doodles returns on Monday. Now, to other news:

Everyone's favorite moustache enthusiast, Andrew Pommier has a little story and photos from his trip to Sydney, Australia for the Tracks in the Snow show (which included his brother Scott Pommier, Derrick Hodgson, Niall McClelland and Seth Scriver) at the Monster Children Gallery up at Fecal Face.

Vancouver's Milan Basic has a new show called Forced Impression, which opens November 6th at Subeez (891 Homer Street). Starts at 7pm, goes til late. All ages are welcome.

Daily Shit

Red Bull's 381 Projects has some interesting stuff announced for Toronto in the next few weeks.

First is A City Renewal Project, which is a huge installation by Specter and fauxreel, where they've taken over a 4,000 square foot warehouse space and turned it into a commentary on the state of urban decay. The show opens Friday Nov. 7th at 39 Lisgar St, and runs from 7 to 11pm. Check the site next week for a sneak peak and interview with fauxreal.

Lastly, Marc and Sara Schiller of the Wooster Collective will be in town the next day (Nov. 8th) for a talk at Red Bull's 381 Projects Gallery (381 Queen St West) which runs from 7 to 10pm.

Daily Shit

In an interesting bit of retail development, Stussy's Vancouver store has launched an online photo exhibition of the building of their store, literally from the forest up.

The exhibition tracks the story of the wood used to build the store from their start as trees in the Squamish Valley to their end use in the store on Powell St.

The first installment is up now, step two should be up on November 1st. You can see the whole thing up in the store when it opens on November 8th.

Oh, and we're now taking submissions for the next edition of SpyCam, so stop being such a wuss and send in your pics.

Daily Shit

Element Eden Advocate Tiffany Bozic has a new solo exhibition opening this Saturday at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery in San Francisco. Called, "Symmetrical Balance" it's a selection of new paintings on maple panels and hand painted prints inspired by her research of the specimen collections at the California Academy of Sciences. Bozic's work is amazing, if you're able, check it out.

If you had to pick one artist that totally personifies "underground" art, hands down, it'd be Robert Crumb. Thankfully, the nice people at the Institute of Contemporary Art of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia recognize this fact and have put together a retrospective of his entire career, which runs until December 7th. Check out some pics at Supertouch.

Daily Shit

Here's a bunch of random crap for you to check out. First off, Plan B just revamped their website, and their B-zine is pretty rad.

Ever check out Bend Press? You should. That way, you'll be up to date on all your Andy Jenkins news. Which is important.

Lastly, the raddest skate company website on the net: Michael Sieben's Roger Skateboards. You'll never have so much fun looking at product.

Daily Shit

Hey. DC just released the latest and greatest installment in their Artist Projects line of collaborations, with artist and Beautiful Losers film director Aaron Rose.

The Aaron Rose Mid and Aaron Rose parka can be seen here. The shoes are packaged in a custom shoe bag, along with a mini 'zine and Rose designed box (see image above.)

Pretty rad. Head over to your local sneaker boutique to pick'em up.

Daily Shit

Well, it's what we call in the business a slow news day kiddies, so here's some randoms: the new Blind video has a trailer up, something tells me Grant's got some crazy shit up his sleeve and Morgan is going to blow minds as per usual.

In more arty news, Todd Francis was officially made Hardgoods Art Director for Element Skateboards earlier this month. Todd said the following about it:

"Element has been my home for the last ten years, and now I get my very own desk. I've got a good feeling about this."

In other news, the insane people across the street from our office have gone from blasting salsa music full blast yesterday to blasting country-themed religious ballads this morning. The power of Christ is compelling us to smash some shit.

Daily Shit

Pro Skaters turned photographers aren't exactly a new phenomenon, but check out Diego Bucchieri's photography website. Not only does the Butcher know how to take a photo or two, the site is slick as fuck.

There's also a great feature over at Sneaker Freaker called "Barefeet & Bitument: The History Of Skate Sneakers" which is, as you've no doubt guessed, a story on the history of skate shoes. Pretty rad.

Daily Shit

Our good friend Simon Cole over at the Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto is having the opening reception for a new exhibition by Toronto street artist Elicser called "Future Fantasies and Memory Playback".

The show opens tonight, and runs until November 9th. Elicser's work is amazing, get yourself over there and check it out.

In other news, have you gotten your Food On Drunk fix yet? Probably. Just in case, I wanted to remind you that it's awesome and you should go there now and read about Dave's salmonella-induced hallucinations.

Daily Shit

With art and politics seemingly being all the rage lately, it's of little surprise that Shepard Fairey, Al Farrow, Paul D. Miller (DJ Spooky) are having a group exhibition
at the Irvine Contemporary Gallery
in Washington, DC. Shep and Al will be on hand to discuss their work and the social and political issues that inspire them.

In other political news, here's a link to a mexican midget dressed in drag as Sarah Palin. I believe this is some form of high concept performance art. Or it's just retarded. Either way, you'll never be able to listen to Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" again.

Daily Shit

Ride Snowboards will be hosting their 7th Annual Snowboard Art Contest next month. Entries are accepted from all over the globe, so by all means, submit your shit.

It'll be judged by the Ride Creative Team, with the top 50 entries posted online and the top 30 and finalists displayed at an art reception held in Seattle, WA. The top finalists will compete for a grand prize of $1,000 and a snowboard produced with their artwork.

You've got til November 7th, 2008 to get your entry forms in. See the whole thing explained in greater detail here.

Daily Shit

No news today kids, it's election day up here in Canada. I'll be spending most of the day in line, waiting to exercise my right to vote. Hopefully for someone who's not gonna turn out to be a total lying asshole.

Go here for information on where you can go vote in your neck of the woods.

Then go check out the Ed Templeton interview I just posted.

Daily Shit

Bit late on this one, but it's kinda on the other side of the world. Monster Children and Stussy put together an art show entitled Tracks in the Snow featuring new works from five Canadian artists (Andrew and Scott Pommier, Derrick Hodgson, Niall McClelland and Seth Scriver). It opened on the 9th, and runs til October 30th at the MC Gallery. If you're in Sydney, Australia, you know what to do.

Oh, and if you're looking for some original artwork, pop by the online store. Dana Cowie has a bunch of one of a kind artwork up for sale.

Daily Shit

Mike Giant's got a new exhibit up at White Walls Gallery in San Francisco this Saturday. Take a peek at what's going up, should be a good show.

Speaking of Mr. Giant, if you go to our online store, we just put up a bunch of waaay out of date hand-pulled silkscreen prints by the man himself, from the personal stash of one Mr. Rob Coutts. We even have a couple autographed ones. Oh we also have a nice little T-shirt by our friend Kyle Shura up there as well.

And in one last bit of selling stuff news, The Quiet Life is having an "economic bailout" sale on their site. Be sure to check out the Good Cause shirts, the proceeds of which will be donated to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Daily Shit

Lifetime Collective and Keep-a-Breast just announced a charity breast cancer art show in Toronto on November 6th and they need your help.

Artists are needed to paint the plaster molds of boobs (much like the ones found here) that will be auctioned off for charity.

They've put an open call out to artists. Anyone interested, hit us up and we'll pass you along to the good folks at Lifetime. It's a great chance to get some exposure, and to help out a good cause.

Daily Shit

There's tons of pics from Todd Francis' "New and Used" show and Don Pendleton's European Tour over at the Element site.

Oh shit. Extremely Sorry teaser is up.

Lastly, in a strange bit of news Robert Pimple (aka Barry McGee) has an artist edition pair of Oakley sunglasses out there. Yeah, I didn't see that one coming either, dude. Check 'em out here.

Daily Shit

There's another new, super limited edition Rebel 8 / TRUE collaboration up and available today, a sweater entitled (can a sweater be entitled?) "When the Lights Go Down."

The only places that will be selling this lovely little sweater are Rebel8.com and TRUE's store in San Francisco. If you're one of those collector types that's just gotta have it, do your thing.

A review copy of Ed Templeton's book "Deformer" came in today. We'll have a little review/interview with Ed up later this week, hopefully (I make a lot of promises that don't come true on here). I'll give you the long and the short of it: it's amazing, go buy it.

Daily Shit

Tomorrow something pretty amazing goes down in Toronto. Nuit Blanche.

Basically, the entire city is set up as an all night art gallery. There's exhibits in museums and art galleries, sure, but that's just a small part of it. There's something like 155 exhibits scattered throughout the city, in parks, tunnels, warehouses, bridges - if you didn't know it was going on, you could be walking home from the bar and stumble across some pretty crazy shit.

Call us sentimental, but it's mind-blowing to see an entire city get transformed into something fun and creative in this day and age. Sure, the idea was stolen from the French, but whatever.

The event's website gives you a listing of all the happenings, so you can plan your night. There's no way you'd be able to see everything, even if you tried.

Daily Shit

Not sure if you've been following the "Clusterfuck to the White House" as Jon Stewart would say, but if you have, you know how down art types are for Barack Obama.

We all know Shepard Fairey's little part for the cause, and now there 's an online auction to raise money for the Democratic nominee at the site Art for Obama. A slew of artists have donated works, including, strangely, Lucy Liu.

In happier, non clusterfuck news, two new skate videos premiered online yesterday: Element's Bam's or Bust! and Stereo's Agency Field Report. Click on 'em and kill some time, kiddies.

Daily Shit

Magic Pony has a new exhibition starting Friday, called Platonic Material Plane by Noel Middleton, which coincides with the Toronto International Art Fair and Scotia Bank Nuit Blanche. Here's a description of it:

"Each year, preternatural influences have arranged the overlapping of pilgrimages to Cormac. Each alike, the groups congregate to observe the path and influence of the Sun. Some closely follow the procession of the equinoxes, while others lay in its warmth. With an intent fixed look, some claim to see their reflection drawn with twelve primitive particles, similarly on their own paths of unknown influences."

I have no idea what that means, but the show looks interesting.

Daily Shit

News is not our friend today, kids. So let's go with shameless self-promotion instead.

Become a fan on our Facebook page. You can chirp/hate on things on the site on there til we get around to a message board. Also, you'll get updates when new content is posted to the site, and even take part in a contest or two.

Oh, and it looks like our pages will be graced with a Bob K interview in the next day or so, which is why I can't be bothered to troll around the net for news right now. I'm crafting a bitchin' feature interview.

Daily Shit

Ed Templeton just released his long awaited book entitled Deformer.

Eleven years in the making, and comprised of 30 years of material from his life, it's a look back at Ed's youth growing up in Southern California, told through pictures, narratives, and artifacts from his past. Looks amazing, you should really go check it out.

Co-incidentally, I also got word today that Deanna Templeton, (Ed's wife, if you didn't know that already) spent her summer making elegant portraits of friends swimming nude in their backyard pool.

The beautiful (and seemingly bum-centric) body of work called "The Swimming Pool", is up at New Image Art (7908 Santa Monica Blvd) in Los Angeles from Oct. 3rd to 24th. if you're in the area, go show some support at this Friday's opening.

Daily Shit

Been meaning to hype this up for a while now. Dave Carnie (the first person to have a short story run on the site, which was probably the only reason you came here in the first place) and his lovely wife Tania run a blog called Food on Drunk.

It is, as you would expect, all sorts of awesome. Especially if like me, you're a wannabe foodie and you get off on reading about other people eating food and going to restaurants you'll never likely go to.

It's got everything you'd expect from the Carnies - pictures of Dave's poop, funny stories, weird random happenings, restaurant critiques - it reads like a cross between Big Brother and the food section of your local paper.

Go bookmark it. Visit it daily. Tell your friends.

Daily Shit

Lots of art-related goodness going on in Toronto tonight. First, Magic Pony is hosting Team Macho's newest exhibition "Kitschy, Gay, and Over in a Second" tonight from 7pm to 10pm. If you can't make it, fear not, the show runs til Oct 26th.

Also tonight, there's a benefit called "With All Due Respect" which is to help some of the artists who had to sue to stop a photographer from exhibiting photos of their graffiti (details here).

If you believe that artist's rights should be upheld no matter what their medium is, c'mon out to Charlies Gallery and buy some art and show your support.

Oh, and if you're in Vancouver, you should go to Color magazine's website relaunch party. Details here.

Daily Shit

The Yves Laroche Gallery has a bunch of pics of the opening night of their Blood Royale show that kicked off earlier this month. Looks like an amazing show, check out their online gallery to see what you missed.

ALIFE just announced two exclusive commemorative Canadian themed tees for it's Vancouver store. If you're one of those people that's just gotta have it and you're not in Van, contact ALIFE's Vancouver store, they'll ship anywhere.

Daily Shit

If you hadn't heard already, David Foster Wallace passed away last week. McSweeny's has turned it's web site into an online memorial thread where fans are welcomed to send in their thoughts, memories and to share stories about Wallace.

In site news, check out Nieratko's new post. We'll have a new edition of Spy Cam up this week, along with our first Gallery of random art, and an artist profile or two.

As always, if you're down to submit, hit us up.

Daily Shit

Tons 'o' fun happening in Vancouver this weekend...

Friday will see French Fred Mortagne's traveling photo exhibit "One Foot In The Grave" make its last Canadian stop at Antisocial, presented by WESC, Vans, FLIP and Color. Fred will be on hand. Everything kicks off at 8pm til late.

Saturday, it's the final date of Element Eden's "Know by Heart" charity art auction. The Toronto date was a great time, and a hell of a lot of money was raised for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. No doubt the Vancouver show (Chapel Arts, 304 Dunlevy Ave) will leave people hurtin' the next day as well.

Check in Monday here at the site for Chris Nieratko's latest and greatest Dumb Dumb Doodles. I'll give you a hint about how "great" it is - it's about politics and I had to call my lawyer to make sure it was ok to run.

PS. How the fuck is a wizard stick considered news?

Daily Shit

Red Bull kicked off a new exhibit as part of their recent foray into the art world, 381 Projects, entitled "other.world" (which is accurate, because when I checked out the gallery space I felt like I was walking on the bridge of the goddamn USS Enterprise.) It's an installation, and it's pretty interesting.

Head on down to 381 Queen St. West in Toronto Wednesday to Saturday between noon and 5pm to check it out. Or, just check back here next week for the full story.

In other news, one of the best artists in the skate biz, Todd Francis, is having a 15 year retrospective of his work at 131 Gallery in San Francisco starting this Friday. If you're in SF, check it out.

Daily Shit

Normally, I try to keep the news on the "art" tip, but this is gonna be skate related cause art is boring today.

The Berrics just launched a social networking site, called MyBerrics. Weird, I know. But everything else about the Berrics is amazing (like you don't watch Wednesdays with Reda religiously, asshole) so let's assume this will be too.

Skatebook's website just got a bit of a revamp, with a crap load of video content. I can only assume the book is as much fun as the site, cause I live in Canada and aren't privy to such things.

Daily Shit

You would think an "artist" would know better. Check out the controversy and some pissed off graffiti artists. Little old lady or not, maybe charging $7,500 for photos of someone else's artwork wasn't such a great idea.

I think I'm going to go shoot a bunch of art at a gallery, then throw my own show, and sell prints of photos of said art. I'll call it "Lazy Photographer Needed Beer Money" and I'm sure it'll be a huge success.

Look for some profiles on the affected artists here on the site in the next week.

If you'd like to support a legit art show, why not head on over to the Show & Tell Gallery (49 Baldwin St, Toronto) and check out Ryan Dineen's Bali show, which runs until October 3rd?

Daily Shit

With one massive hangover continuing into its second day after Element Eden's first "Know by Heart" show (which was amazing, incidentally. Next stop, Van), this is going to be one brief-ass news update.

Enjoy Nieratko's new weekly feature. It should take the edge off a bit.

We'll be posting some more lengthly pieces tomorrow. Keep those submissions coming, kids. We've been blown away with the quality for this week's SpyCam and Gallery features.

Daily Shit

Well, Friday's here. If you're in Toronto this weekend, get your ass out to Element Eden's "Know by Heart" art auction Saturday at the Resistor Gallery (284 College St).

Tons of great art from artists from across North America is up for grabs and all proceeds will be donated directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, so bring your cheque book with you and a healthy desire to spend money. Everything kicks off at 7pm.

Keep the submissions coming kids. Still need art for Monday's Gallery of randoms, and next week's SpyCam.

You may see a bold new artist doodling his way onto the lips and hips of the nation here on Monday. His name may be Chris Nieratko.

Daily Shit

Over 4,000 people showed up last year, so it's no doubt gonna go off again this year.

Plus, 150 promo eS tees will be given away to those in attendance. See the tee you'll be getting for free.

After party is at Pop Opera (686 Hastings St) from 10 pm to 2 am with Eh! Team DJ's and DJ Marvel (The Freshest Kids).

Daily Shit

Team Macho, Toronto's favorite art gang, are having a new exhibition at Magic Pony starting September 25 (and running until October 26) called Kitschy, Gay, and Over in a Second. For details, check here.

In other news, Color magazine and Red Bull's Shoot to Thrill competition ended over the weekend. Shoot to Thrill is definitely the best event going on in Canadian skateboarding right now, and the teams were stacked with some of the best skaters, filmers and photographers from coast to coast this year. So go vote for your favorite.

Word has it that the Vancouver team brought in a ringer by the name of French Fred. You'd better go check it out.
